The first thing that you will notice when you create a Boomerly account is that we require you to use Facebook’s login system. We did this to make Boomerly free and as safe as possible.
Another priority for us is to make sure that Boomerly is as simple to use as possible. Unlike many services, which require you to write pages of text, our automatic profile builder takes care of the work for you. This leaves you with more time to take care of the fun stuff – making friends with people like you!
While Boomerly is primarily a social discovery and messaging service, we also want to create a sense of community among our members. Our generation is special. Since starting Boomerly, we have received many questions about how the service works. Here are the most common, along with our answers.
Why does Boomerly use Facebook Login?
From the very beginning, we wanted to make Boomerly free to use. At the same time, we wanted to make the service as safe as possible. Using Facebook Login helps us to do both.
When you click the “Log In with Facebook” button at http://www.boomerly.com, you will be asked if you want to give Boomerly access to some of your Facebook data. The data that is required to set up your Boomerly account includes your basic information, such as your name, email and public profile photo. This makes building your profile a breeze.
We also ask for your birthday and location to set up your account. Let me explain why.
Boomerly is designed for people 50 and better. This is why we need to know your birthday. Your location is also important because it helps us to find people who live in your area.
We realize that not everyone has a Facebook account. However, as a small team, this is the only way that we can keep Boomerly free and safe to use.
Please rest assured that nothing that you do on Boomerly will appear on Facebook. None of your messages will be visible. We will not post on your behalf. In addition, none of your Facebook friends will be notified that you joined Boomerly.
How safe is Boomerly?
We do everything that we can to keep Boomerly safe. First, we require all of our members to log in with Facebook and use their real names. Second, we limit the number of conversations that members can send every day. We also give you control over who can contact you. For example, you can choose to only be contacted by men, women or both men and women. In addition, Boomerly uses HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) to make it harder for hackers, or anyone else for that matter, to track your online activity.
Of course, as with any service, it always pays to be careful. Never share your address, credit card details or other sensitive data with anyone who contacts you on Boomerly. At the end of the day, each of us is responsible for our own safety and Boomerly can’t guarantee that any person is who they say they are.
